Artificial intelligence supports the production of facial implants

A research group at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) is using artificial intelligence (AI) to create individual facial implants. Instead of designing a model from scratch for each patient, as has been the case in the past, in the future we will be able to use AI to access a huge database of patient-specific facial data and implants, and thus create a reconstruction model for each patient within a very short time” (R Smeets, Hamburg, Germany).
The new technology will initially be used for patient-specific facial implants created for a fractured orbital floor – for example, after accidents. Other applications are in the pipeline, according to the working group.
