Retina chip implanted

A team led by Frank Holz, director of the Department of Ophthalmology at Bonn University Hospital (UKB), has implanted a retinal chip in a patient with advanced dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) to preserve his vision.
AMD is a visual disorder that increases with age and is characterized by progressive impairment of sharp vision.
Patients wear specially developed glasses with a camera, through which the chip receives the image signals and energy. The induced electrical impulses stimulate the remaining neuronal cells of the retina.
Implantation was performed as part of an international clinical trial. Follow-up is over three years, with patients undergoing a training program to use the retinal chip.
