Stretchable, Adhesive Biosensors

Biosensors could play a greater role in healthcare in the future. New technologies developed at Caltech are stretchable, adhere reliably to organs, and combine diagnostics with adaptive therapeutic approaches. Applications such as heart monitoring or targeted nerve stimulation demonstrate how long-term, personalized treatment can be delivered directly in and on the body.
Wearable and implantable biosensors could fundamentally transform healthcare. They make it possible to detect diseases early, monitor them continuously, and treat them in a targeted manner. The device has not yet been used in humans. In animal models, for example, the device was able to monitor glucose levels and, when levels were too high, stimulate the nerves that regulate insulin secretion. It was also possible to track changes in the heart caused by high blood pressure.
