More than 100,000 heart surgeries in Germany in 2019

The number of heart surgeries in Germany increased last year by around 1.8 percent to 100,446 operations (German Society for Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery (DGTHG).

Not included in the figures are, for example, pacemaker and defibrillator interventions as well as operations of the aorta adjacent to the heart without using the heart-lung machine.

Significantly more elderly patients were treated. Nevertheless, hospital survival rates remained stable in the individual intervention categories.

According to the overview, in 2019 33.5 % of patients were 70 to 79 years old. 18.6 % were 80 years and older. The group of patients over 80 years of age thus increased by 6.2.

Aortic valve stenosis was the most common invasively treated heart valve disease, followed by mitral valve insufficiency.

The number of donor hearts and thus the number of heart transplants increased by 6.7 %.
