In a port implantation, a port catheter is implanted as a permanent access to the body’s venous system. It is inserted into one of the major body veins and advanced into the great vena cava under x-ray guidance.
This avoids the need to repeatedly find a new access by puncturing the vessels during frequent drug administration. Blood sampling is also facilitated.
